About this speaker

Julie McNamara, a former classroom teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area, is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at CSU East Bay. Her research focuses on the teaching and learning of mathematics concepts that are foundational but considered "hard to teach and hard to learn." She is the coauthor (with Meghan Shaughnessy) of Beyond Pizzas and Pies: 10 Essential Strategies for Supporting Fraction Sense, 2nd ed. (Math Solutions 2015) and author of Beyond Invert and Multiply: Making Sense of Fraction Computation (Math Solutions 2015). She cares deeply about the mathematics education of all children, especially those from traditionally marginalized communities.
